Trip Report - May, 2018 - Day hiking the South Kaibab, Tonto and Bright Angel Trails

For the first time in countless years I did not get to do a spring backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon. It just was not in the cards this year. There is probably not a Grand Canyon backpacking trip in the cards for the entire year and I was lucky to be able to fit in this day hike. At least it was a good one and I had a beautiful day for it.

When I first did this day hike back in November of 1988 it was only my third Grand Canyon. I did it with wife, Robin, and it was her first introduction to Grand Canyon hiking. My first introduction to Grand Canyon hiking had been in December of the prior year when I did a day hike down the Bright Angel Trail to Plateau Point followed by a short jaunt down a very snowy South Kaibab Trail the following morning. It's hard to believe that was over 30 years ago already.

Trip highlights

  • Repeating this wonderful day hike again
  • Sunrise from Cedar Ridge
  • Views from the Tonto Trail
