GCPS Outings for 2002

March 16: 100th Anniversary of the Grand Canyon Post Office slide show by Bob Becthel.

Bob is a professor at the University of Arizona and teaches Environmental Psychology. He is also chairman of the board of the Postal History Foundation, a non-profit organization that specializes in postal history and educating children. Bob is also the author of the Catalogue of Arizona Statehood Postmarks.

The post offices at or near the Canyon were Tolfree, Tourist, Grand Canyon, Kaibab and Kaibab Forest which became North Rim, and Supai. He will give a brief history of each with some anecdotes about the characters like John Hance. He will also mention the stamps that have been issued at the Canyon, beginning with the National Parks stamp in 1934.

March 29-31: 2002 Easter Hike and Service at the South Bass and Ruby Drainage. (See article below.)
April 27: Glen Canyon by Katie Lee at Jerome State Historic Park (formerly the Douglas Mansion).

Katie Lee is well known in the Southwest as a writer/photographer/actress/singer/musician who fights for the preservation of wild and remote places. Her first book, "Ten Thousand Goddam Cattle," an epic cowboy chronicle told through the songs of cowboy songwriters, was republished by the University of New Mexico Press in Spring 2001. Her award-winning documentary film, "The Last Wagon," celebrates two cowboy songwriter legends of the West, Gail Gardner and Billy Simon, with rare footage of them talking and singing. Her record company has released 5 recordings of cowboy songs. Her latest book, "All My Rivers are Gone," is a paean to Glen Canyon, a paradise that was lost to the reservoir waters of Lake Powell. In conjunction with the book, Katie released two recordings, "Colorado River Songs" and "Glen Canyon River Journeys."

Lunch at 12:00 NOON at Red Rooster in Jerome, program at 2:00 PM at Jerome State Historic Park (formerly the Douglas Mansion).

Note: Katie will be able to play a few songs. Her wrists are healed and she practices every day. She has an indomitable spirit.

May 18: "Route 66 Across Arizona. A Comprehensive Two-Way Guide for Touring Route 66" by Richard and Sherry Mangum at Northern Arizona University Cline Library, Flagstaff.
June 22: Annual Picnic at Shoshone Point, Grand Canyon.
July 20: Museum of Northern Arizona Special Collections Tour.
August 17: "The Grand Canyon Orphan Mine" by Maurice Castagne at Grand Canyon Maricopa Observation Point.
September 21: Grand Canyon Aviation History by Ron Warren at Grand Canyon Airport.
October 19: "Below the Rim & Beyond the Lake" (Two Commanding Canyons-Grand Canyon & Glen Canyon's Lake Powell) slide show by Gary Ladd and GCPS Board meeting.
November 16: To be announced.
December: No Meeting.

Riffey Video

A note from Liz Roberts from Tuweep states that a video tape is now available that was made at the Rendezvous for John Riffey who was the ranger at Tuweep for many years.

The tape was made last spring when a group got together at Tuweep and told stories and related memories of John (see the April/June Ol'Pioneer). For those who would like a copy of this tape send $7.00 no later than March 15 to:

Old-Timers Event !

March 23-24, 2002

Grand Canyon River Guides, Grand Canyon National Park, and Grand Canyon river outfitters will be holding the annual Guides Training Seminar, "Old Timers: Lessons of the Past," on Saturday and Sunday, March 23-24, 2002, at the Hatch River Expeditions Warehouse. The event is open to the public; $25.00 will get you two full days of talks, slides, movies, food, and hob-knobbing with Colorado River Runner Old Timers. Free camping is available onsite; motel rooms can be let at Cliff Dwellers Lodge, Vermillion Cliffs Lodge, and Marble Canyon Lodge. Easter Hike and Sunrise Service
March 29 - 31, 2002

The Easter Hike and Sunrise service will be held March 29-31, 2002. The group will hike down the South Bass trail Friday - Good Friday - and set up camp in the Bass and Ruby use areas.

Saturday individuals / groups will day hike on the Grand Scenic Divide, Bass Canyon, or one of the Terraces on the Supai. Saturday night we will gather around the "candle" (campfire) and tell about experiences in the Canyon and stories about the Canyon. The Easter Sunrise Service will be at the Bass Overlook. This service and experience is one that may leave a lasting impression on you.
