Day Hikes From The River

Grand Canyon National Park Ranger Keith Green presented a fascinating A talk by river runner and author Tom Martin was presented about "Day Hikes From The River" at La Quinta Inn in Flagstaff on October 21.

"Why write another book on the Grand Canyon?" Tom Martin, author of Day Hikes From the River, said "After all, Earle Spamer has 22,000 entries in his bibliography of the Grand Canyon." None of those books, according to Tom, include day hikes from the Colorado River.

Tom worked on his book for ten years and has included 75 hikes. The hikes are rated Easy, Difficult, and Very Difficult. The book also suggests places to camp in both high and low water.

Tom showed slides depicting some of the hikes. Everyone enjoyed the slides.

Appreciation

The GCPS received a $100.00 donation recently from an anonymous donor. We express our thanks to this unknown person for the gift. It will be applied to one of our ongoing projects.

Correction

In October/December issue of The Ol'Pioneer, the picture on the inside cover was captioned incorrectly as being at Dripping Springs. Pat Lauzon informed us it was actually along the South Bass Trail.

Cemetery Cleanup Project

Dear Grand Canyon Enthusiasts,

The South Rim Cemetery cleanup project today was a wonderful success. There were six representatives of the National Parks Service there to assist and direct the eighteen volunteers. The volunteers well represented all three of the sponsoring associations.

The morning began with a tour of the cemetery lead by Stewart Fritts. His knowledge and humor provided an interesting and informative introduction. Mallory Smith and Greg Woodall then put us to work. There were plenty of pine needles to rake, gravel to spread and soil to rearrange. With such a dedicated group there was also plenty of time to share adventures and plan future work projects.

Our volunteers came not only from all over the state of Arizona but from Texas and Indiana as well.

On your next trip to the South Rim make sure you tour the cemetery to honor the history that is there.

Mike Coltrin
GCHBA president
