Grand Canyon Music Festival - 1999 season

This was the 16th season for the Grand Canyon Music Festival and the fourth or fifth season that we've come to the Grand Canyon to see it. This year's performances were extra special for me because the featured performer for the festival was none other than R. Carlos Nakai, a legendary performer of Native American flute music. I think I own almost everything that Mr. Nakai has released and until this year I never really expected to ever see him in concert. I've checked his tour dates in the past but I guess most people in Boston are not refined enough to be able to enjoy this type of music. ;-)

We were able to see Mr. Nakai perform on two of the three nights that we went to the Music Festival performance and he performed twice during each night. One performance each evening was of a new work by Katherine Hoover that was written specifically for Mr. Nakai and the Grand Canyon Music Festival. For this performance Mr. Nakai played one of his Native American flutes, Clare Hoffman performed using a traditional silver flute and Gordon Gottlieb provided all sorts of percussion effects.

Mr. Nakai's other performance each night was just him - unplugged so to speak. He did have some help from Gordon Gottlieb on the second night. Mr. Nakai performed on a variety of Native American flutes and also tried to explain to the audience why the Native American flute was so different from the European flute and why they are so hard to compose music for. I enjoyed these performances immensely.

My favorite R. Carlos Nakai album is, of course, ...
